Yep, just one guy.

Hi, I’m Xander Fischer, creator and host of Silver House. I’m not a professor or a business owner, I just love showing people how the deep annals of the analog world can be advantageous, useful, and joyous. I’ve been making photos with increasing obsession for almost 20 years and I love working with people who share my extreme passion for imaging. If you’re keen to absolutely pour yourself into printing for a month or two and you don’t mind a quirky space with rambunctious people, you might be a good fit.

FAQs

  • Potentially. If you’re really strapped for cash but your work is really good and simply must be made this way, I could probably make an exception, but I do need help with the rent…

  • No, not at this time. This is an opportunity available to one person at a time who effective functions like a roommate who wants to pay a months rent to make a fuck ton of work. It is not a community darkroom or digital workshop.

  • The program is new enough that I don’t really have bona fides to offer. It may be kinda scrappy, but this is a great opportunity to work with some of the best equipment ever made and make work you can’t make anywhere else, and certainly not in the unbridled way you can here. It may be scrappy, but there’s nothing else like it.

  • We’ll do a zoom call or two and feel it out. If it turns out to be somewhat of a chafe, well… the residency is fairly short.

  • Yes, I am well known in the Chicago photo community and I can provide you with plenty of contacts who will vouch for me.

  • For a variety of reasons, I’m limiting it to just a few months at a time for now, with a minimum of one month.

  • You should definitely have been in a darkroom before and be well acquainted with photo technique. I know a lot of this stuff is esoteric, inaccessible or some shit I custom made, so I’m happy to teach you that stuff, but I’m generally looking for people with at least some technical inclination. Ultimately, the nature and quality of your work will be the main deciding factor.

  • Let’s be honest-- It’s just me, Xander, reviewing proposals and choosing the best fit. I’m looking for passionate, self-motivated artists making compelling work with a strong portfolio, and technical skill.
